This month we are reviewing Control 9 from the Center for Internet Security (CIS) framework, which focuses on improving protection and detection of threats that originate from email and the web.

In today’s interconnected world, email and web browsers play a crucial role in our daily lives. However, they are also prime targets for cyber attackers who are always searching for accessible and vulnerable network services like poorly configured email, file, and print services. So, what can we do?

CIS control 9 has us start minimizing the risk by ensuring that only necessary services, up to date applications, and secure protocols are in use on your network. Then, implementing filters to prevent users from accessing harmful websites or downloading malicious files from emails and browsers. And finally, reviewing all ports, protocols, and services in use with regular checks and scans help detect any unauthorized changes they may occur over time.
